|
Very easy to use. Answer
questions via typing (short answer) or simply c licking the multiple choice
button. Very easy to use and communicate information in a private way (only
sharing with the teacher)
|
Fairly easy to use. Tailor
made polls can lend to communicating in a less confronting way. It’s a
familiar ideas – answering questions, which makes it less daunting to adult
learners
|
Definitely. Very personal,
you can find your friends via a search, and have only your close friends and
family available to talk to. It is easy to use, and uses technology to extend
upon what we could already do via phone, but for free or a VERY reduced cost
|
Fairly easy to use. Private /group
sessions allow learning in a comfortable environment, however, webcams, voice
chat and regular chat make it very personal.
|
Notes, pictures, locations
are all set and organised by the learner. It is a personal set of notes,
ideas and topics to help record things in an easy way.
|
Very personal – use your own
pictures, or take a picture, add text, add video or audio. Very customisable
– can be shared with others
|
App design is fairly easy to
use. Select the function you want, and it then appears very similar to what
has been used before – Word, Excel, Powerpoint. It’s the same thing they have
done before, but just looks a little different.
|
Encourages interaction with
friends, in a more private way. Pictures, status updates and messages are all
available, fairly easy to use (once you learn the basics) and are familiar to
many learners already

interesting and a fun task.
|
Pervasive and ubiquitous
|
Multiple email accounts can
be set up and delivered in one place. All email a person wants to receive is
readily available at the click of a button. Permanency, accessibility
|
Multiple calendars can be
set up (with colour coding). This allows for events from your work, home and
personal life to be easily managed. Able to be tapped on to see what is

pictures are never lost, but can be shared amongst anyone logging in. Can set
favourite pictures/files to track easily. Either on a mobile device or PC,
can be accessed very easily. Plenty of free space to start up with.
Permanency, accessibility
|
If you have an internet
connection, and the room number (which doesn’t change for the teachers’
account) you’re good to go! Offers Interactivity
|
Quiz comes straight to
email, making it an easy thing to answer when the leaner is ready. Interactivity
|
If you have an internet
connection, you can skype. Chat instantly back and forth easily, or call for
a face to face meeting that costs nothing. Simple to use, free/low cost and
easy. Immediacy, interactivity.
|
It is more a scheduled
activity, however, if a meeting is required, easy to bring in quickly and
easily throughout the day (providing meeting room details have been set up).
Interactivity
|
Very helpful. Easy to record
thoughts, ideas, pictures at a moment’s notice and keep them all in one
repository. Permanency, accessibility, interactivity
|
Easy to use. Using own
pictures, voice, video makes it so simple and easy to use. Internet
connection is required. Interactivity, immediacy, permanency, adaptability
|
Yes. Instead of having to
write that document at a computer, do it on the go. It’s the same idea – type
in the data and save. Do it at the learners’ convenience, whenever and
wherever. Permanency, accessibility
|
Yes. Most learners’ friends
are on facebook, if they aren’t. It becomes a part of interacting with
friends – events, status updates, relationship changes, everything you want
to know, check out or find out about someone is very likely there already.
Permanency, instructional activities
|
You can do this anytime – no
access to internet required, or even needing external input (photos etc). All
can be done by taking a picture with the app, adding your own voice (in the
app). Easy to use no matter location. Internet only required to share (facebook,
twitter).
|
Fit into the lives of learners (allow for
productive ‘dead’ time - e.g. when travelling or queuing)
|
Just one click of a button
and it automatically updates, across multiple accounts (keep track of
everything in one place)
|
Make a quick appointment,
remember birthdays for everyone each year! Receive alerts when these things
happen, to ensure they are not forgotten. Ever. Fits in well
|
Look at pictures, sync up
your latest pictures/documents. Easy to do (in the background) or when you’re
walking to work.
|
Perfectly! Take the quiz
when you are able to (once the teacher has set it). As a teacher, set the
questions by typing when you have a few minutes spare – using device keypad,
or simply import an existing quiz
|
Yes. Fill in a survey or
quiz in a few minutes, most of the time could be easy questions. Click a few
buttons when you have a moment or two spare.
|
Perfectly. Waiting for a bus
or train? Have a IM chat. Need to catch up but can’t be there physically?
Simple video call.
|
More likely it’s a scheduled
event for a meeting. It would be harder to communicate this way while waiting
in a line or travelling, though probably a bit impractical
|
Yes. Keep a note of certain
things as they pop in to your head throughout the day, while travelling or
queueing. Also review what you have done before - can search for topics to make it quicker
|
Definitely. Need to create a
how to or a message to someone? Want to send a quick pic but with a message?
Fun to use and ease of use make this a very handy and quick to use and app
that can fill in “dead time”
|
Yes. Convenient to use
whenever – simply create and update as required. Budgets, letters,
assignments can all be done as it would be done on a regular computer while
on the go
|
Yes. A few minutes free?
Update your status, see what others are doing. Follow people you find
interesting, companies, brands can all be looked at in a few minutes spare
time (with internet connection)
|
Perfect for this. It takes a
few seconds to create, and to share.
|
Portable - allow anywhere,
anytime learning
|
Can be set up to
automatically download – if on wifi or roaming, automatically appears and
gives a noise to alert the user.
|
This is more for reminders,
and remembering dates and tasks, however, dates can be set and reminders and
events to remember to complete tasks.
|
Handy to upload documents
and make sure important ones are safe (especially with assignments or
important documents)
|
Definitely! This is so easy
to use and simply requires an internet connection, a room number, and the
teacher to set it up
|
This is very portable – it
could be used to reflect upon own learning
or review about anything through the questions and surveys.
|
If you have an internet
connection, you can use this anywhere.
|
Yes. If you have an internet
connection, you can have a meeting and learn anytime, anywhere. Dependent
upon others available for a meeting
|
Yes – notes /documents
recorded can be viewed, edited and learnt from anywhere, anytime
|
Absolutely. View how to
videos, watch messages about assessment, English, tests, any subject. Learn
quickly and easily in a very interesting way.
|
Yes. Need to edit an
assignment/collaborative document to share/budget spreadsheet? Do it and send
it on. Need to view
|
Yes. If learning pages are
set up, it is familiar, easy to use and accessible anywhere with an internet
connection, at the convenience of the learner
|
Yes! You can send messages
using this, create new ideas or even introduce a topic or idea. Embraces
anytime/anywhere.
|
Immediacy of communication (including speech and
data-sharing)
|
Forward emails (previous
addresses sent to are saved for ease of use), reply to emails instantly,
using the built-in keyboard
Simple key function allows
for this as well as printing
|
Because calendars can be set
from multiple locations, you can set yourself a work reminder easily. This
can then be seen by those in the office right away.
|
Immediate sync. Is then
available to anyone logging in to that account immediately.
|
Sending/receiving of data is
fairly quick, with a slight delay of a few seconds between sending/receiving
data. May be different with different quality internet connections. App also
would download with older versions to suit other iOS versions
|
More data sharing, but only
in the form of survey/quiz information
|
Instant back and forth.
|
Yes! Over the internet,
allows for face to face learning, documents, websites, to be shared, voice
and text chat instantly between multiple learners
|
Notes can be shared via
facebook, twitter, email or linked for anyone to access. Immediate sharing
capabilities for a range of documents created in Evernote
|
Once the video is uploaded,
it can be emailed to be viewed immediately. It can also be searched, as can
videos on a range of subjects. Speech/audio and data is available to be seen,
and bookmarked or emailed for later use
|
Data is able to be shared
via email. Not immediate (when you check your email) but allows for data
sharing in word, pptx, txt, excel or pdf formats
|
It is posted to facebook
instantly. Links, some attachments, pictures and typed text are immediately
visible and able to be used right away.
|
Almost immediate. A short
time is required to render you Gami so that it can be saved and sent via
media of choice. Actually typing in text/recording/taking a picture is almost
instant. The preview takes a few seconds to load
|
Allows access to learning by those in dispersed
communities and isolated situations
|
|
It is a helpful tool, but
not really helps for learning in this instance
|
Would allow for them to have
immediate access to the files. Not a primary elearning purpose
|
It would allow the teacher
and student to communicate answers, take quizzes and work in a team
regardless of location
|
Yes, as it is a suvey/poll,
it is again only based on internet connection capability
|
Yes! This is a fantastic
tool for accessing people or group conversations in a very low cost way. If
users are on skype, it is free. Calling is at a very reduced cost, which
would assist those in isolated situations
|
Yes. No matter the
geographical location, this way to learn is not dependent upon location, only
internet connection
|
Yes. No matter what
location, notes can be created and shared, internet capabilities required
|
Absolutely. Internet is
required, however, access to videos/training/ideas on a range of subjects is
available at the click of a button
|
More a helpful learning
tool, to record, document and send information. Handy in remote locations too
(but requiring internet)
|
Yes. Most people are already
aware of facebook, if they aren’t using it themselves. Allows people in
remote communities to connect to others anywhere in the world
|
It would be a helpful and
fun tool to learn with. The app makes taking pictures, voice recording and
telling a message simple, quick and easy
|
Contextualisation through location-aware features
such as GPS.
|
No
|
No
|
No
|
No
|
Perhaps, if it’s built in to
a question in the quiz/poll
|
It does document the
location of users, to give more awareness (it is set by the user, however)
|
No
|
Yes. Notes mark the location
and are able to be shown with very good accuracy on a world map (Places tab)
|
No
|
No
|
Location, time, and general
information is available through posts
|
Not available
|
\Allows data to be recorded and learning
processes captured wherever they happen.
|
Allows data to be recorded
in the case of email – take a picture, and you can forward that picture on
(via the photo section, using email). Not fantastic for learning processes,
but allows for some data.
|
Not a lot – some
information, such as appointments and reminders
|
Dropbox allows the data
created (pictures, video, documents) to be saved and stored in a central
location, rather than capturing data itself
|
Yes. The data can be
recorded and then collated for use in teaching in the future, to assist in
direction, ideas and for general student feedback (how did it go, what did
you like/dislike)
|
Not so much, perhaps if it
was incorporated in to the quiz/poll/survey
|
Yes, chats are saved
automatically and
|
Yes. The session can be
recorded, so the voice, documents shared and text chat can all be saved, to
be viewed easily later on, at the learners’ convenience
|
Voice, workbooks, notes,
pictures can all be recorded, saved in Evernote and then shared publicly.
|
Yes. A topic or data is
recorded, it can have text or voice added to, and lines drawn on the screen
to indicate important information (great for how to). Easy to share
afterwards.
|
Yes. Data is recorded
(entering it in manually though) and there is potential for learning
processes to be captured, but it would only be in document format.
|
The ease of use, and way it
is aviable on mobile devices allows for information (status) and pictures to
be shared and captured wherever they happen
|
In some ways, yes. Some data
could be recorded, though there is a limitation to voice record of 30
seconds.
|
Access to mentors, tutors and others learners
on-the-move.
|
Can email back and forth as
you go about with mobile internet. Not immediate access, but access when they
can check their emails
|
Not really
|
Access to share data with
mentors/tutors and learners on the move (sharing the document or give them
your dropbox details)
|
Not so much
|
No
|
Yes. If they are online (you
can see who is and who isn’t), then you can chat or call them, wherever you
or they are.
|
Yes, but it is mostly a
meeting type app. You can have instant access to them via the app, however,
they need to be avaiblle to meet. Can be done on the move (or where there is
internet).
|
Yes, if items are shared,
including workbooks, you can receive or send feedback or information in a
variety of ways instantly
|
Yes. If they have a video
available, a simple bookmarked link, or searched for video can be found
quickly and viewed at the learners’ convenience
|
If drafting emails based on
these documents, then yes. They could send it and then receive responses,
proving an internet connection was available
|
Yes. Send a message, post on
their wall, chat is all available on the move
|
Not so much, no.
|
Perceived as an acceptable way for learners to
receive reminders and chasers - and to manage their time
|
Reminder emails or emails to
quickly catch up. Not as helpful for reminders as a calendar, but has
capability
Has bcc option, to always
send a copy of emails to inbox to remind/confirm what has happened
|
Yes! Nice, easy, simple and
built-in to devices, with the capability to add all their calendars in to
one. Colour coordination this in case distinguishes the role of the event
(blue might = family, red = work)
|
No
|
No
|
Emails to remind to complete
the quiz is the real reminder it gives. No real time management
|
Less time management, but
able to chase more information from others or get updates from others in a
time friendly way (messaging takes but a moment)
|
More for meetings rather
than this purpose. No real reminders/chasers/time management available
|
Reminder notes, information
is more available in this app. However, if it is shared, then there is the
capability to be reminded/informed and updated of what is going on
|
Not to receive reminders or
manage their time, but useful in spare/on the go time.
|
Only if an email was sent
containing a document for a follow up. Not really helpful in time management
|
Yes. Reminders are already
available for certain things such as birthdays. Messages can be sent or via
chat for reminders
|
Possibly, if it was sent as
a reminder in the form of email or on social media with the avatar speaking a
reminder message
|
Bite-sized e-learning resources can be delivered
to learners (especially useful for basic skills or work-based learning)
|
Emails can be received with
information that points in the right direction and leads to more information.
Subscribed emails lists can email a daily/weekly update on relevant topics
|
Only as a reminder, or an
event. A reminder to remember how to do something, a daily tip or follow up
has potential for elearning, but in a limited capacity
|
It can be shared via email,
twitter, facebook or text message, so it could be done this way. Documents or
work-based learning articles could be shared from dropbox
|
More a quiz/question app
|
It is bite-sized and can give the learner a small task with
which to reflect upon
|
Yes, files can be shared
over skype, or a quick chat/video session can be established. It only takes a
button or two to work it (call or chat) so this helps to make it easier.
|
Yes. Shared documents can be
presented to assist in basic skills or work based training. More likely to be larger, not bite-sized
however
|
Yes. Information can be
passed on in small forms (notes, information) easily.
|
Yes! Short, quick videos can
be viewed. Basic skills can be shown with the help of the lines drawn on the
screen
|
Yes. Documents in the
mentioned formats can be created, emailed, edited and sent around. Basic
skills are needed for these file types, and for work based learning this is
especially true and helpful).
|
Yes. An update with a link,
private message to multiple people or event with information attached would
assist (and help basic learners)
|
Yes. A quick update or
reminder or update could be sent to them. Also, it would be a good stepping
stone to become more familiar with how to do things on i-devices for users
with very basic previous exposure
|
Abstract (representational) and concrete
(environmentally-situated) knowledge can be integrated.
|
Mostly concrete knowledge –
what can be sent via email. However, abstract items could be sent
|
Really concrete items only
|
Concrete
|
Concepts and ideas can be
polled and recorded. Mostly concrete, but ideas and concepts can be
communicated
|
The questions asked can
reflect abstract or concrete
|
Skype caters for both.
Mostly concrete items can be sent, but the concept of communicating with
people all around the world opens the doors for all ideas and topics
|
Yes. It purely depends on
what is being presented and in what format
|
Concrete information can be
sent, however, there is some capability for abstract depending on what is designed
and set up
|
Concrete is available – how
tos and basic instructions. Abstract is also available, depending on the
content of the videos
|
Both available- more
concrete in this instance, but depending on document type and nature of the
documents
|
Depending on how facebook is
used (pages set up, group work done), allows for both
|
Abstract ideas can be told
through storytelling and characters. Concrete ideas are too, it could be used
for a presentation, introduction or instead of a real person
|
Peer-to-peer networks make learning more
student-centred.
|
No
|
|
Information stored centrally
can assist to be sent to peers to be commented upon
|
Not really peer-to-peer.
Teacher focused/based
|
Everyone’s results may help
to make it more student-centred
however, it is more a
teacher-student interaction
|
Yes. All students can be
online and talk/sent attachments/video conference each other. Quick, easy,
fun to use when you have only a minute or two spare
|
Yes. Students can meet,
discuss, share documents, information, chat in a meeting scenario
|
Yes. To be able to share
with students on an equal level will make it more student-centred and focused
on feedback
|
|
It would be helpful to send
documents to others students for reflection and feedback on the move
|
Very much supported here.
Facebook is about getting connected, and makes it easy and helpful to do so
and for students to share and work together
|
Not so much
|
Promotes active learning
|
Not really
|
Not really
|
More file share than active
learning, but could assist
|
|
More reflective learning,
but could contribute to active learning overall (making learners think about
their own attitudes, skills and abilities)
|
Yes. Promotes connections
between learners, to enable them to learn online with one another in a
real-time, active way
|
Yes. The sharing of ideas,
information, video/text/audio chat promotes being connected and actively
learning
|
It helps. Sharing with other
students/linking information on public sites makes it more interactive and
interesting
|
Yes. Want to know about a
topic? It’s right here! Search for the information you need, then watch the
video!
|
Promotes learning, more
traditional than active, though dependent on document content
|
Yes. Ideas can be sent
instantly, it is engaging and different people can share ideas and concepts
together
|
Yes. It is an interesting
app. It’s a new way to think and to look at ourselves. Something a little
offbeat and funny, which could be used in a positive experience way
|
Enable new learning environments
|
Not really
|
Not really
|
Helpful to share a lot of
documents
|
Yes, some new learning
environments. It’s a safe way to answer questions without worrying that
someone else might see your written answer, or by speaking out loud.
|
Would assist in doing so,
but may not be able to do so by itself
|
Yes. Learning via skype is a
new way to learn, but a conference can be set up quickly and easily, allowing
multiple people to talk, chat and share attachments in the one place,
together
|
Yes. It’s a new environment
with which to learn although based on a real-life meeting scenario. Enables
no geographic boundaries to collaborate
|
Yes. It is shared in a different
way, enabling it to be commented upon, feedback received and learn on a
different student-teacher way
|
Yes. It’s a different way to
learn, but learning can take place through instructional, interesting or a
different perspective video.
|
It’s a more portable and
easy way to use documents. Not necessarily a new learning environment, but
more mobile.
|
Yes. A dedicated facebook
page, a group set up for a learning task, it all takes places online in a new
environment
|
Yes! It’s a different way to
experience an avatar, especially for adults. It would give them an
interesting way to catch up, send a message, or to send ideas to one another
|
Increases accessibility for learners with special
educational needs
|
Settings for large/giant
font sizes to cater for those with eyesight issues
|
Perhaps this would assist
learners with memory problems to remember and also assist with time
management
|
??
|
Perhaps? Not sure. Able to
assist
|
It could help identify their
needs and that information could help to tailor the program more towards them
|
Has some extra accessibility
options (extended keyboard navigation,
screen reader mode). Enables communication in a phone-like way that may be
easier to use for some special needs learners
|
Learners would not need to
physically be present as in a normal meeting. Learners could learn from home,
or wherever they were most comfortable
|
Perhaps. Positive feedback
and feeling connected may assist learners with special needs
|
The drawing facility could
make it very clear what is being
shown, to enable learners with more difficulty to understand more
clearly
|
More traditional learning
style – doesn’t necessarily increase, but if the student is unable to access
a computer, then the portability would definitely assist.
|
Its mobility and interaction
could help those with special needs
|
Sort of. It is easy to use,
but you can type (rather than voice record) if the person couldn’t speak. No
subtitles for those unable to hear, however.
|
Encourages reflection in close proximity to the
learning event
|
Not reflection, but perhaps
updates to the learning event
|
Again, not reflection, but
perhaps updates to the learning event
|
??
|
Definitely! A question or
task set to reflect upon the experience or idea would definitely assist here.
Reports can then be emailed for collation and reflection
|
Could encourage reflection
after the event (a poll asking how it went, what was liked/disliked)
|
Not really. It is more for a
chat/conversation role, but again depends on how it is used
|
It can encourage
collaboration and sharing after the event, or meetings to collaborate later
on
|
Yes. Shared notes, ideas,
thoughts after the event promotes reflection
|
Yes. If the learner was
encouraged to capture their own thoughts or ideas via a video, then yes.
|
It can, if recorded or
documented in the app itself. Or if others share documents about the event.
|
Yes, as a group can discuss,
reflect and interact before, during and after the event
|
It has the ability to do so,
depending on the event, what messages were sent and how it was structured.
|
Reduces technical barriers
to e-learning
|
The ease of use, familiar
and straight forward design (also compiling mail accounts in to one place)
help to break down the barriers for learners.
|
Helps to assist in
reminding, remembering and updating. Helps to form a basis for an adult
learner embracing the digital world
|
Helpful for
files/folders/pictures
|
Yes. A easy to use, helpful
way to learn/answer questions/get feedback
|
It can help to identify
problems in an anonymous way and it familiar enough to existing ways of doing
things for learners to be comfortable with the change
|
Yes. It is a cost-effective
way to discuss, chat and see each other in a single or group environment.
This helps to overcome a barrier. Contacting those at a different location
becomes cheaper and easier to do
|
Yes. Learners do not need to
be in a physical location to attend meetings, conferences, webinars or
functions of the sort. It makes it easier to learn and speak and listen to anyone
irregardless of location
|
Ease of use, sharing
capabilities, note taking, centralisation of notes/ideas helps to make it
more appealing and helpful (a more central way to do what we already do)
|
It is simple to use, fun and
different. I can see this as a helpful way to reduce barriers, and encourage
elearning.
|
It does reduce barriers to
e-learning. The app takes what most can already do in Office and lend it to
be portable and easy to use. Also
|
Yes. It makes being
connected a bit easier, and integrates with often already existing accounts
and knowledge
|
Yes. It’s easy to use, fun,
but incorporates many elements together, recording, typing, creating,
constructing an avatar… publishing to social media or email. Makes a few
different things possible, and introduces it in an easy to use way
|
Relevance to adult learning
|
Very helpful tool for
communicating information and ideas in a familiar, easy to use way
|
Reminders, time tracking is
helpful and a good way to ease in to using technology to replace existing way
of doing things (paper calendar/diary)
|
A good way to make documents
and pictures available no matter your location. Helpful for adults on the
move
|
This can be used to gauge
technical levels, get feedback on how comfortable learners are, what they would
like to see/not see. It would be a good way to convey how they feel
|
Again a way to get helpful
feedback, to enable adult learners to get the most out of their course, but
feeling familiar and at ease with the task

I find one of the most
useful tools. It will take a bit of learning potentially, but the ability to
call for free, or have group meetings for free, regardless of location, will
help everyone to be able to interact and learn and work together
|
Very helpful to meet in a
more formal way, and to get information in a collaborative environment, where
they can share documents and discuss, but have the ability to record and view
this later (or if someone is unable to attend)
|
A very handy tool for adult
learning. It is good to centralise, keep it simple and set notes as reminders
or general information. The workbook features will help strongly, as this can
help to lead to collaboration and sharing amongst the learners. May require a
little getting used to
|
This would be a useful tool
for how tos and creating step by step guides. It’s ease of use would assist
adult learners to view items right away. They would then be able to acquire
the confidence to create and share their own videos
|
Open office takes
conventional office and makes it mobile. Very useful for adult learners as it
is familiar, easy to use and most will have used office before. It will give
adult learners the capability to see the benefits of being mobile, and help
them towards a more mobile learning environment
|
Facebook helps learners to
connect with one another and share ideas and information. A combined/group
page would take a site that is familiar, that many may already know how to
use, and present in a way to assist their learning. It is another tool to
help them collaborate with one another, share their ideas and feelings
(helpful if they are struggling) and support and encourage one another
|
An interesting tool that could
be used to see the fun of mobile learning. It could be used for communicating
an idea or concept, or putting themselves forward in a less confronting or
intimidating way. Adding sound, text or customising the avatar is easy, fun
and a new and interesting way to learn and communicate.
